Ringworm (Tinea Corporis)
Ringworm, or tinea corporis, is a fungal infection of the skin that may develop on the face, limbs, or trunk of the body. It usually appears as an itchy, raised red circular patch with a scaly border. As the patch gets larger, the center heals, leaving a ring-like appearance. The resulting circular patches can vary from very small to very large.
Because of the ring-shaped lesion that appears on the skin, people use to think that ringworm was caused by a worm under the skin. It is now known that the infection is caused by a fungus. Fungi thrive on moist, warm skin, which is why ringworm is often worse in hot weather.
You can get ringworm by direct bodily contact with infected individuals or infected pets (usually kittens and puppies), as well as with items that have been in contact with those individuals and pets. Athletes involved in contact sports are usually susceptible. Not all body rashes are ringworm. It is important to see your doctor if you think you have an infection.
