Jock Itch (Tinea Cruris)

Jock Itch, or tinea cruris, is a fungal infection of the groin and upper thigh of men. It usually appears as a rash with well-defined, raised edges and can cause severe itching and discomfort. The rash may extend from the crease between the inner thigh and pelvis to the anus.

The fungus that causes jock itch thrives on moist, warm skin. That’s why jock itch occurs when the groin area becomes sweaty, and is often worse in hot weather.

You can get jock itch by coming in contact with clothing, bedding, and towels of infected individuals; this can transfer the fungus to you. Towels or clothing that have come into contact with an athlete’s foot infection - also a fungal infection – can transfer the fungus as well.

Not all groin rashes are jock itch. Other conditions may be similar in symptoms and appearance. It is important to see your doctor if you think you have an infection.

Treatment Guidelines

  • You should not use Naftin® if you are allergic to any of its ingredients.
  • Carefully wash and dry your skin.
  • Apply Naftin® cream or gel to the affected areas as directed by your doctor. Wash your hands after application.
  • Avoid covering up the affected area with bandages or other dressings unless your doctor instructs otherwise.
  • Keep Naftin® away from your eyes, nose, mouth and other mucous membranes.
  • Continue to use Naftin® for the length of time prescribed by your doctor even if your symptoms go away.
  • Call your doctor if the affected area becomes irritated (increased redness, itching, burning or swelling).

Prevention

The most important thing you can do to prevent jock itch is to keep the groin area clean and dry.

Other Tips

  • Shower after each workout
  • Dry thoroughly after bathing or swimming
  • Wear loose cotton underwear and loose-fitting pants
  • Keep the groin area dry and perspiration-free
  • When getting dressed, put on socks before underwear
